Welcome to Surfside.    We hope you are enjoying your stay and will come back often to visit.

This letter is provided to the rental companies by the Surfside Save Our Beach Association.  A non-profit organization involved in efforts to maintain and improve the quality, safety, beauty and ecology of a very special place – Surfside Beach.   We hope this letter will help communicate how important it is for everyone to join the efforts to protect and preserve the Texas Gulf Coast.

Our beaches are such an important part of the vacation experience and we want to make sure we and future generations continue to enjoy them.

We need your help.  As you are probably aware, erosion has taken its toll of many beaches including Surfside.   Just take a look at the devastation to beach front properties along the pedestrian beach.  In November 2003 in an effort to protect the dunes and to prevent further erosion, the Village of Surfside Beach undertook a sand fence project.   SOBA volunteers assisted in placing the fences.    Some of the sand fencing was damaged or destroyed by the storms and high tides in 2005.  Unfortunately some of the damage is caused by people who unthinkingly use the sand fencing or Christmas trees for firewood.

Each year Save Our Beach Association (SOBA) volunteers collect unsold Christmas trees from several lots in Houston and take them to a central location; local residents are asked to take their Christmas trees to collection sites.  County employees transport trees from the various collection locations to Surfside.  Approximately 10,000 trees were collected last year.  During Dunes Day, an event sponsored   by Brazoria County and Surfside Beach ,  volunteers stake and tie the trees along the beach.  The Christmas trees and fences help trap the sand and add to the dunes.  The dunes are a vital part of flood and wave action control during a tropical storm or hurricane.

It is very important that the fences and trees are left undisturbed.   Small campfires are allowed (refer to #6 of the Beach Rules).   We all know what fun it is to sit around a fire on the beach and there is usually plenty of driftwood.

Leave only footprints in the sand” is also very important.    Please don’t litter,  there are plenty of trash bins along the beach.   You can join many other visitors and residents to leave the beach cleaner than you found it.  Glass bottles should not be taken to the beach.   A piece of broken glass could ruin a vacation.

You can be part of the activities to clean up and preserve the beach.  The State of Texas Adopt-A-Beach semi annual beach clean up is held in April and September.  Dunes Day is held in January and we can always use help collecting and transporting Christmas trees each year.  If you would like to get involved,  please visit the sobatx.org website or the surfsidetx.org website.

Once again we hope you enjoy your stay and have fun on the wonderful beaches and warm gulf waters of Surfside.
