Save Our Beach Association
Action
In the past ten years, Surfside Beach has been affected by ten hurricanes and tropical storms: Nicholas (2021); Hanna, Marco, and Laura (2020); Harvey (2017); Gustav and Ike (2008); Dean (2007); Rita (2005); and Claudette (2003). SOBA members are taking the lead in keeping our neighbors informed, organizing emergency management training, and coordinating efforts with the local village government and first responders.
Planning. The most important action you can take is to download the Brazoria OEM app to your cell phone. This provides alerts and critical information before, during, and after an emergency. Go to your app store and search for "Brazoria OEM."
You should also review some of the guides provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other organizations. Please see below.
Training. If you are willing and able to help your community, you should consider undergoing training:
-
FEMA Incident Command System (ICS), and
-
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training.
FEMA Individuals and Households Program
FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides financial assistance
and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by disaster who
have uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs. Disaster assistance is not a substitute for insurance and cannot compensate for all
losses caused by a disaster. It is intended to meet the survivor’s basic needs and
supplement disaster recovery efforts. Click graphic on left to download PDF.
You can apply for funding through the FEMA Individuals and Households Program by going to DistasterAssistance.gov. You can also go to a Disaster Recovery Center near you as listed on the website, after you allow FEMA to know your location. Click the graphic to the left.
